Managing Contacts

The Contacts section allows you to store, organize, and manage customer information associated with SMS and MMS conversations. Contacts are shared across the Inbox, campaigns, analytics, and add-ons, ensuring consistent data everywhere.

Contacts Overview

Contacts represent the people you communicate with via SMS.

Key points

  1. Contacts are created automatically from incoming messages

  2. Each contact stores identity, conversation history, and metadata

  3. Contacts can be edited at any time without affecting message history

The Contacts screen displays a searchable list of all saved contacts.

Tags & Notes

Tags and notes help organize contacts and add internal context for your team.

Tags

  1. Create and assign unlimited tags to contacts

  2. Add or remove tags from the Inbox or Contacts screen

  3. Use tags to group contacts and filter lists

  4. Tags are reused in campaigns, analytics, and automations

Notes

  1. Internal-only notes attached to a contact

  2. Notes are never sent via SMS

  3. Useful for internal context, reminders, or status tracking

  4. Notes are visible to all users with access

Custom Fields

Custom Fields allow you to store additional structured information on contacts.

Supported capabilities

  1. Create custom fields from Settings → Custom Fields

  2. Define field name and type

  3. Mark fields as required or optional

  4. Control display order

Usage

  1. Edit custom field values from the contact profile or Inbox

  2. Custom fields can be used as merge tags in campaigns and templates

  3. Changes are reflected across all areas of Volts Connect

Searching & Filtering

Quickly locate contacts using search and filters.

Search options

  1. Name

  2. Phone number

  3. Email

  4. Notes or custom field values

Filtering options

  1. Filter contacts by tags

  2. Filter by status or custom fields

  3. Combine multiple filters for precise results

Search and filtering are non-destructive and do not modify contact data.

Contact Actions

From the Contacts list, you can perform common actions.

Available actions

  1. Edit contact details

  2. Add or update tags

  3. Add or edit notes

  4. Update custom fields

  5. Send SMS directly to a contact

Messages sent from the Contacts screen appear in the Inbox automatically.
